So, what do I want to be when I grow up? A musician, of course. Oh yeah and don't forget my flat in NYC with a drive-in elevator for my ice blue Porsche 911 and Triumph motorcycle that sit in my living room. That's the dream anyway...
Now, back to the real world. I've wanted to play a string instrument since my short trial with a cello in the 5th grade. Since there isn't much out there for picking up the cello, the guitar was my second choice. So much so, that in 1983 I asked for one for Christmas and got a beautiful Korean Hondo that lived under my bed and the in the closet for the next 20 years. I learned a couple of chords and loved the look and feel of it, but that's as far as it went. Instead, life took over and college, marriage, children and career dictated what I did with my time. Still, it was there, under the bed waiting.
By the time I decided to get serious, lack of humidity and string tension took their toll. She was still pretty, but no longer playable. So, I gave up and sold the old Hondo. I was done - right? For a while I decided there just wasn't enough time. I had other loves. That's what I told myself, but something was still there. Maybe just a peek at some Amazon guitars or the super player I would never be on YouTube. Surely I could just pick up something cheap and take some lessons. Dad, can I get some shoes? Dad, can we go fishing? Dad, my jacket is too little. Dad, can I have this for Christmas? Of course - no reason to even question it. At least I could still dream from a distance.
God has a funny way of doing things in His own time in case you hadn't noticed. One day I'm running spreadsheets, brokering print jobs, doing payroll and meeting with banking presidents and the next I'm thrown head-first into a new audio/video world. A foreign world where I didn't know the players or the rules. Oh well, I always fall back on what my Dad told me, "You never know what you can do until you have to." So, a learning curve later and I was starting to figure it out enough to pull it off as long as nothing went down at the wrong time. Then it all fell apart. Everything was zeroed out and unplugged (literally) and I was stuck. Now what God?
When I look back, He always provides and this is no exception. A new person came into the picture and not only brought the talent and know-how, but was actually cool to be around. That's a rare combination in the grown-up world I've been living in for so long now. Pretty soon things were not only working in my A/V world, they started to get fun. So fun, we jumped in and totally rebuilt everything from the ground up. Wow!
Back to my guitar - did I mention my new friend was a guitar expert? Funny coincidence. The guitar you see in the background of this blog is a special gift. It's a second chance at a 30 year old dream. Let's see where it goes.
Thanks friend!
